I was excited to get land a new job as a legal assistant in a law firm. What a great start and I knew I was going to learn a lot. One of the first thing I learned working around the new lawyers was that they carried legal malpractice insurance. Funny, I thought insurance was just for cars but quickly found out that lawyers get sued too. Sometimes clients do not like the outcome of their case and they blame the attorney they hired. Former clients can allege that they were misrepresented or that their attorney did not do an adequate job. That is where my job as an assistant come is. I make sure I maintain records for all the research, hours worked, statements taken and letters written. All this documentation helps prove the attorney’s case and prevents a case being lodged against them for malpractice.
